Getting around
Careem, taxis, stairs, and how Amman gives directions.
- Careem and Uber are the easy option. Fares are regulated at about 20% above the meter, and nobody needs directions.
- Yellow taxis have a meter: ask for it (il-'addād). A ride across the centre is 1.50 to 3 JOD; round up as a tip.
- On your own in a taxi, sit in the back.
- Walking is lovely and steep. Weibdeh to downtown by the Al-Kalha stairs is about 11 minutes, downhill.
- Traffic is worst at rush hour and quietest on Friday mornings.
Directions, Amman style
Amman navigates by landmarks and by its numbered roundabouts, the circles (dawwār), counting out from the 1st Circle near Rainbow Street. Amman is 1-indexed. When in doubt, send a pin.
TipWeibdeh to Shams el Balad by taxi costs about 1.50 JOD. After the after-party, take a car: the stairs are no fun at 2 am.
